Learning new things, meeting new people and reuniting with old friends

Last Wednesday I took the opportunity to go to a workshop on DSLR filmmaking.  I should say THE workshop on DSLR filmmaking.  It's called Canon Filmmakers Live featuring Philip Bloom. He, Jon Conner and Cristina Valdivieso are putting on these day-long workshops around the country.  If you get a chance, go.  Really, you'll be glad you did.

I didn't realize just how much of a big deal Mr. Bloom is before I got there.  I had read his website and watched some of his training videos.  Those alone are worth your time.  During the workshop he showed us a few clips of his finished work, and some stills of his equipment.  And one of him with George Lucas.  Yes, that George Lucas.  Apparently Mr. Lucas and his colleagues are experimenting with using video shot on DSLRs for their movies.  Which, to me, means learning the best way to shoot video is a good way to spend time.

He spent the day sharing tips and answering questions about process and equipment. Even though it's called Canon Filmmakers Live, it's not sponsored by or associated with Canon.  Bloom demonstrated several different kinds of cameras.

I don't think I've had so much fun or learned so much in one day.  You don't have to be an expert shooter or a near newbie (like me) to learn a lot from this workshop.
