I'm working on a couple of new documentary projects this year. I've been emailing people and groups I want to photograph in order to introduce myself and my projects. That's been taking a bit of time to arrange so I decided I'd just call people to see what happens.
One of my projects is about different faiths and the texts practitioners of those faiths follow. I got an appointment the other day to visit a center for Tibetan Buddhist studies. I was expecting just to talk to someone in an office on the first visit, so I could explain what I wanted to do, learn a bit about Buddhism, then make an appointment to come back later to make the photographs. I took my camera to the appointment anyway, just in case I saw something I wanted to photograph. It's a good thing I did. When I got there, some of the monks who study there were doing some of their daily readings. I was taken right to the room where they were reading, and I was allowed to take pictures. I recently changed camera systems and my new DSLR has video capability, so I also made a couple of short videos. I'm not exactly sure what my finished project will be, but I've already started playing around with the sound and some of the images.
